Keepsake Nålbinding Needle ll is adorned with embroidered velvet ribbons and a black tassel. It arrives in a paperboard box wrapped in vellum. Nålbinding is a fabric construction technique which translates directly as “needle binding” The use of nålbinding needles is known to date back to roughly 6,000 BC in Israel.

The oldest sewing needle known was made out of bird bone by an extinct species of the human race. It was found in a Siberian cave and is estimated to be 50,000 years old. The sewing needles we use today are hardly any different than their bird bone ancestors as these earliest creations were more or less perfectly designed to perform their crucial function. In effect, they have been essential to the survival of our species as they have laced together the materials that have kept us warm and dry. Furthermore, and perhaps as important, we stitch with a sewing needle to create beautiful textiles imbued with meaning. Creating meaning is essential to the art of being human. It is a thread that runs through us all. As a species, we carry with us affinities for that which is essential and meaningful, and just like our ancestors 50,000 years ago, we keep the sewing needle close at hand. It is our quiet instrument, rhythmic yet soundless, looping through time and space.

Nålbinding Needle ll is made of bone and measures 4” in length
